Lavender Season Is Here: How to Grow It, Use It, and Love It Year-Round

If there’s one plant that truly feels like a little luxury, it’s lavender.  Back home in Albuquerque, NM, we have a beautiful place in the North Valley called Los Poblanos where you can get all things lavender.  They have huge lavender fields and make all organic fresh lavender products on site and I always get my favorite product, their lavender syrup for my tea and coffee.  Yummy!!

With its calming scent, vibrant color, and so many practical uses, lavender deserves a spot in every garden, balcony, and kitchen.  Whether you’re working with a sunny apartment patio/window or a backyard garden bed.  This timeless bloom can bring beauty, wellness, and even flavor into your life.  Let’s get into how to grow it and all the lovely ways to use it once it’s thriving.

First…When Is Lavender Season?

Lavender typically starts blooming in late spring and continues through mid to late summer, depending on your climate. The peak of the season is usually June and July, making now the perfect time to get planting or prepping your harvest!

Growing Lavender: Tips & Tricks

  1. Sunlight is Everything
Lavender loves full sun. Aim for at least 6–8 hours of direct light each day. A sunny windowsill or patio is perfect if you’re growing in a small space.
  2. Think Dry and Drainage
Lavender doesn’t like soggy roots. Choose well-draining soil or mix sand into potting soil.  Terracotta pots are ideal because they allow moisture to evaporate quickly.
  3. Water Sparingly
Once established, lavender is drought-tolerant. Water only when the top inch of soil feels dry. Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes! Trust me, I’ve done it.
  4. Prune for Longevity
After flowering, trim about one-third of the plant to encourage new growth. This keeps your lavender bushy and prevents it from getting woody.
  5. Container Friendly
This is why I’ve always grown lavender year after year. Lavender grows beautifully in pots. Try varieties like ‘Munstead’ or ‘Hidcote’ for compact growth and strong fragrance.

Household Uses for Lavender

Don’t’ worry, you don’t have to be a homesteader to take full advantage of lavender’s versatility. Once it’s dried or freshly picked, you can start incorporating it into your everyday life.  Here’s a few ideas to get started:

In the Kitchen

  • Lavender Lemonade:  Infuse water with dried lavender buds and lemon juice for a fragrant summer drink.
  • Herbal Teas: Steep a few buds with chamomile or mint for a relaxing evening tea.
  • Lavender Shortbread Cookies: Add a floral touch to baked goods with finely chopped lavender (culinary grade only!),
  • Savory Dishes: Use sparingly in herb blends like Herbes de Provence to flavor chicken, potatoes, or roasted veggies.

Timeless Tip: Always use culinary-grade lavender—typically English lavender—for food recipes.  You can grow English lavender at home as well.

Natural Remedies

  • Sleep Support: Need a restful night of sleep?  Yes, please!  Place dried lavender in a sachet under your pillow to encourage restful sleep.
  • Headache Relief: Inhale steam infused with lavender oil or apply diluted essential oil to temples.
  • Bug Bite Soother: This has worked wonders on my son who gets huge welts from mosquitoes.  Lavender oil can help reduce itch and inflammation (just patch test first!).
  • Calming Bath Soak: Add dried lavender and Epsom salts to a muslin bag for a DIY herbal bath.

Home Decor & Fragrance

  • Dried Lavender Bouquets: Hang bundles upside down to dry, then use them in vases for rustic elegance.
  • Scented Drawers: Make lavender sachets from fabric scraps to freshen closets and linens.
  • Wreaths & Garlands: Combine lavender with eucalyptus or baby’s breath for beautiful handmade décor.
  • Candles & Potpourri: Mix dried lavender with dried citrus, rosemary, or cinnamon for a natural air freshener.

Lavender Timeless Tip: A Natural Household Helper

Did you know lavender is also antimicrobial?  I’ve done this for years and add a few drops of lavender essential oil to a vinegar-based surface cleaner for a lovely scent and added cleaning power. It’s especially perfect in kitchens and bathrooms.

Final Thought: A Little Bloom Goes a Long Way

I could go on forever about how amazing lavender is and how beneficial it is to have in your home.  Lavender is more than just pretty — it’s practical, timeless, and calming. Whether you’re growing it on your windowsill or using it to wind down before bed, there’s something magical about having this plant close by. Try incorporating it into your home this season and watch how even the smallest bloom can transform your space and your routine.
